201 Sunday 14th January 2024 Rochdale Canal towpath : Hebden Bridge to Sowerby Bridge
Having got the bit between his teeth, Simon wanted to finish the towpath with the final section into Sowerby Bridge.. This was a direct repeat of a trip from the classic era in January 1980. We drove to Hebden Bridge, stopping at Nutty's Butty's along the way. We parked at Hebden Bridge station.
We picked up where we left off , spotting a Beatles fan moored up there.
Where you have to cross the main road to rejoin the towpath between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd , there's now a droll sign.
There's now some fancy canalside apartments in Mytholmroyd.
On the way to Luddenden Foot we spotted the strangest-looking barge we'd seen anywhere on this towpath.
We called in at The Old Brandy Wine pub for a drink. We had a darts march. I won.
After we dragged ourselves out of the pub, there was a very pleasant section alongside Holmes Park.
A more industrial landscape heraled journey's end in Sowerby Bridge.
I rembered a long tunnel just before the end but in fact it was little more than a wide bridge, Funny how the memory plays tricks on you. At Tuel Lane we had to leave the canal as it passes underneath the town centre.
We found our way to the wharf where the Rochdale Canal formally ends.
We then retraced our steps to Tuel Lane and The Commercial Inn for tea.
We then made our way to the station and caught the train back to Hebden Bridge.
