297 Sunday 21st December 2025 Ordsall Hall

Image
This was Simon's choice. He had been before with his primary school but couldn't remember much of it. We caught the train to Manchester Victoria then went to BFS  to film our "lunch" for our "All The Eats"  playlist, The video will appear here in  due course. We  then caught the tram to Exchange Quay , the  nearest  stop  to  the  Hall. It was a short walk to the Hall  from there. The  entrance faces  away from the road and that  side is  obviously older. We first went in the Great Hall where a plastic feast was laid out. This impressive screen shows the quatrefoil motif fround throughout the building. Back in the foyer, I overheard a conversation about  a  tour at  2 pm. The guide didn't seem very enthusiastic about doing it but we waited for it anyway and  he was OK. This bed in the Star Chamber is original to the Hall but had been sold on and  moved elsewhere. The  millionaire pu...

296 Saturday 13th December 2025 The Calder and Hebble Canal: Mirfield to Dewsbury

Image
This  was  my  choice  to  continue along the Calder  and  Hebble Navigation  to Double Lock Bottom and then follow  the  Dewsbury arm into the town centre. We  drove  into Todmorden. We  had  the  best part of an hour before  the  train to Mirfield so we went to the  record  shop  and  then the  cafe opposite  the  market (not that great ).  We  caught  the  train  to  Mirfield  and  quickly found the canal. We spotted this  community boat  offloading  some customers. Simon asked the boatman some  questions. The bloke instantly assumed Simon was trying to gatecrash the  party and wasn't very friendly. We  soon passed the  remains  of  a  viaduct  carrying  the  old  Mirfield to Cleckheaton railway. We  soon reached  the  Shepley Bridge  mar...

295 Saturday 6 December 2025 Manchester

294 Sunday 30 November 2025 The River Mersey Stretford to Urmston

I  chose  a  filming  trip  to  the  River Nersey. The footage we filmed will appear here in due course.

293 Saturday 22nd November 2025 Calder and Hebble Canal /Huddersfield Broad Canal Brighouse to Huddesfield

Simon  chose  this  one, a repeat  of  our earlier trip , this  time  getting  it  right after pre-trip reserach. The weather forecast wasn't great but we didn't have to put the brolley up once. We  drove to Todmorden. We'd just missed a  train so we went  into  the  town. We  had  a look  round  the  information centre then went  in  a  record shop which had only just opened. Simon bought a Yes LP. We  then had a quick look round the market and bought some Norwegian socks and Swedish cinnamon buns. We  caught  the  train to Brighouse and  visited the  same cafe for some breakfast. We  crossed the river Calder  which looked  pretty full.  This time round, we found our way through the back streets on  the other side of the  river  to the next section of canal. This  soon took us under  the  M62....

291 Saturday 8th November 2025 Triceratops exhibition, Manchester

Image
Simon really  just wanted to go for something to eat in Manchester but he accepted visiting  the Triceratops exhibition at  Manchester Museum as part of the trip. After a couple of errands we went to  the  Delhi  House  Cafe. The video we filmed there will appear here in due course, After a full meal there we  waked to the Museum to walk it off. The  exhibition was a big disappointment.  Basically what they had was a  reconstructed  Triceratops skull ( around 50% of which was genuine fossil ) which was worth seeing and they'd cobbled together an exhibition which was mainly display panels  and a few stuffed animals (probably relocated from other parts of the Museum) with  superficial resemblance to the dinosaur. There were  one  or  two activities for the kids but that was it  We  then went for a drink in the Museum cafe . Then we headed for the train home.
