297 Sunday 21st December 2025 Ordsall Hall
This was Simon's choice. He had been before with his primary school but couldn't remember much of it.
We caught the train to Manchester Victoria then went to BFS to film our "lunch" for our "All The Eats" playlist, The video will appear here in due course. We then caught the tram to Exchange Quay , the nearest stop to the Hall. It was a short walk to the Hall from there.
The entrance faces away from the road and that side is obviously older.
We first went in the Great Hall where a plastic feast was laid out.
This impressive screen shows the quatrefoil motif fround throughout the building.
Back in the foyer, I overheard a conversation about a tour at 2 pm. The guide didn't seem very enthusiastic about doing it but we waited for it anyway and he was OK.
This bed in the Star Chamber is original to the Hall but had been sold on and moved elsewhere. The millionaire purchaser has now loaned it back to the Hall.
This one wasn't an antique as you can see.
I admired the medieval wall painting in the Great Chamber.
On the top floor, there is a coat of arms room with not much else in it.
The tour moved on to the kitchen
We then went into a display room where there was an old boat recovered from the Irwell
Simon posed in the stocks
We then went for a drink in the cafe where we tarried a bit too long. We then had a quick look at the formal garden.
We then hurried off to Exchange Quay for the tram but had to wait 12 minutes for the next one which made things very tight.
We got off the tram at St Peter's Square. With no hope of reaching Victoria in time, we ran down to Salford Central but we'd missed the train. With 2 hours to wait for the next one, we caught a bus to Bolton to eat up some of the time then went to Bolton FM to while away the remainder. I tripped and hurt my knees on the way back to the station. Then we finally arrived home.
