1. Saturday 1st February 2020 Bolton
After working on a book about the Littleborough Travelling Society for the past couple of years, which is still a work in progress, I realised I was missing something obvious. With my son having reached the age at which the LTS started to come together, we could actually revive it even though I now reside in Bolton. Where this will lead, I don't quite know but this is the happiest I've felt in a long time.
I gave Simon the choice of the first trip and he opted for Bolton. Bolton played its part in the original Travelling Society story. It was the venue of two trips and we had stops there on two other occasions. Our first visit in October 1978 was the beginning of Stephen Meehan's ascendancy in the group while our last one in March 1980 was the last trip he attended. On that occasion, we intended to do the Bolton Elephant Walk but couldn't find the starting point. Just after Christmas, Simon and I walked part of it on a Sunday afternoon but it went dark before we could finish it.
With free parking available on a Saturday, it made sense to go by car. Our first port of call was Asda at Astley Bridge where Simon bought Queen's Greatest Hits on vinyl after weeks of saving up. One of the other customers said "good choice" when he took it to the counter.
We then drove on to the town centre where we parked up at the Topps Way car park. We went in Nat West where I transacted some business at the machines.
We then set off to complete the Bolton Elephant Walk. We couldn't get in Bolton Parish Church , one of the buildings was covered in scaffolding and another had probably been demolished but otherwise we found all the elephants.
After we finished the walk we went to Subway where I had an egg sandwich and Simon had a Meatball Marinara Melt. Simon wanted to get home and play his record so we brought our first trip to a close.
