4. Saturday 22 February 2020 Hollingworth Lake Circular
This was my choice- to relive the very first Saturday trip from 13 May 1978.
That day Patrick Brennan and myself called at my Gran's house, Lincoln Jackson's shop and Roundhouse newsagents. Gran went into a home in 1984 and Lincoln's business closed down not long after his death in 1997. I still showed Simon where they were but I didn't realise the Roundhouse had now closed despite a sign remaining over the door.
On the original trip, we walked most of the way up Hollingworth Road on top of the low wall bordering Cleggswood Hill. This is no longer possible as the wall is now in a poor state of repair with many of the flat flag stones that topped it now missing. In some places the wall has all but disappeared. This process had begun before I left the area but it was sad to see that no one had arrested the destruction.
When we got up to Hollingworth Lake, the wind was blowing very fiercely and Simon was relieved that we went into the Visitor Centre. After looking round the displays we went to the cafe where I discovered I'd left my wallet in the car so we had to watch the pennis a bit. We had tea and Simon had some crisps. There was a mini-drama when a man who looked like he might be Down's Syndrome sat down on one of the chairs and it promptly collapsed under him. Thankfully he didn't seem to be hurt.
After that we commenced the trail . The first stretch was very windy but once we had some tree cover it was fine. We stopped at The Pavilion Cafe halfway round where Simon had some crisps. We then completed the walk round to the Beach Hotel.
The newsagents where we met Stephen Meehan that day was now a private house. As we walked along Lake Bank Simon liked the look of the fish and chip restaurant Mr Thomas's for lunch though I explained we had to get back to the car first.
When we got back to the car I was relieved to find my wallet was still there. We went back to Mr Thomas for lunch. Simon had cod and chips, I had curry and chips. We were both happy with it. We then went to the amusement arcade where Simon went on a Batman whack-a-mole and a Rainbow ball shower. They paid enough tickets to claim some sweets.
We then moved on to Spotland. Simon had an extended stay in Desmond's Den where he designed a bag with a drawing of the character 2D from Gorillaz. Unfortunately Dale lost 2-1 to Coventry.
