11 Saturday 11 April 2020 Darwen Tower Walk
Simon wanted to go to another tower so he chose a walk up to Darwen Tower.
I had proposed to start from Tockholes but the car park was all sealed off . The top car park at Thorny Bank was also blocked by boulders but the lay-by nearby on the A676 was empty so we parked there.
We took a concessionary path towards Hollinshead Hall then picked up the right of way.
We took the steep path signed for Lyons Den . It was a warm day and Simon struggled a little. We had a rest at the bench at the top from where we had our first sight of the Tower. Simon expressed dismay that it wasn't nearer. He cheered up as we got closer and he realised there wasn't much climbing to worry about.
We enjoyed the views over Darwen as we got to the Tower. I expected it to be closed but it was open and we climbed to the top. Simon was a bit hesitant about following me on to the final staircase as there was evidence of renovation work nearby but he came up after it failed to collapse on me.
After drinking in the views we had a drink on the benches at the bottom. We then headed back taking our time on a rather rough descent to Lyons Den. After we climbed out of the valley we had a stop at a gate where a mard-arsed cyclist told us we were too near it. I mean if you're that scared, stay at home. you know .
We passed through Tockholes and went into the woods ignoring the stay away notices pinned to the gate. We stopped for another rest at a bridge over the River Roddlesworth where a very tasty cyclist was also resting. Simon knocked an empty bottle of Lucozade into the river but managed to retrieve it without getting himself wet.
The trek upstream back to Hollinshead was a long haul and Simon had had enough. When we reached the car park at Thorny Bank there was a water authority van parked outside and a guy in a deckchair with a dog. I don't know what he was doing there as no one was likely to try to move the blocks of stone but he looked safe so I suggested Simon stop there while I retrieved the car and picked him up. Probably the most useful thing the guy did all day.
We drove on into Mill Hill where we found a Spar selling hot food. After lunching there we did the week's shopping at Asda before returning home.
