15 Saturday 9 May 2020 Knowl Hill
Simon said he wanted to go up another hill for his choice so I picked Knowl Hill above Rochdale. partly because I'd never climbed it before and partly due to a report that Bury's KFC was open for drivethrough.
I devised a short route from the South Pennines outdoor Leisure map. We parked at Owd Betts. From there to the summit of Knowl Hill was a steady plod upwards, not particularly steep and well defined. It was getting warm so we had a drink stop there.
I lost my bearings a bit coming down, veering off the path to the right thinking we were over-shooting the stile we needed only to find no stile through the wall. On re-reading the map it was clear we needed to be further along the wall and the path we left might have been going in the right direction after all.
The way down was a bit rough and towards the bottom I got lost again. Having failed to get through a fence we had to re-ascend to a higher path. I felt quite ill in the heat and was glad of a rest when we got to a gate. I think I lost my compass here as it fell out of the map case.
There were no further issues as we passed through Red Lumb and back up to the main road.
We then took the Ashworth Road and went into Bury. At the KFC. a pretty young girl was telling people that the reports were wrong and we'd still have to go through Deliveroo . I wasn't paying their surcharge so we moved on to Asda in Bury and had some hot chicken there after doing the shopping.
