16 Saturday 16 May 2020 Reddyshore Scout Gate
This was the first trip after the first easing of the lockdown. As garden centres were now open, I chose to combine a walk in the Todmorden area with a visit to Gordon Rigg's in Walsden. I took along Paul Hannon's Walks in Calderdale and let Simon choose a walk from those around Todmorden. Inevitably, he chose the shortest, a 4 mile walk along Reddyshore Scout Gate, the old packhorse track connecting Walsden and Littleborough.
We parked outside Walsden Cricket Club. There was a nippy breeze and I felt quite cold in just a T-shirt so I put my caguole on. We headed up behind the Waggon and Horses to join the steep Allerscholes Road. By the time we stopped at a bench halfway up, I was warm enough to take the caguole off. Simon had a brief conversation with a couple of horseriders that passed.
Eventually the gradient eased and we passed the Allerscholes milestone.
As we crossed the county boundary, I pointed out the things we could see including Blackstone Edge which I mentioned was the highest point in Littleborough. Simon responded by choosing it as our destination for the following week.
We dropped to the junction with Calderbrook Road where we had a brief conversation with a local about the road closure. It was interesting to see the vegetation starting to creep across the tarmac. We left it to walk the path which runs above the Summit railway tunnel. We stopped for snacks at a huge concrete slab which I guessed had been placed there following the collapse of one of the old air shafts that mark the hillside. Someone had arranged rocks in the shape of a heart on top of it.
Further on Simon lost his balance on a plank crossing a marshy patch and put his foot in the bog. Fortunately his boot didn't come off and he shrugged off the mishap.
We dropped into Bottoms and joined the canal towpath for a short distance. The route in the book crossing the railway had been closed presumably pending a new bridge so we had to go a short way further on the towpath than had been planned.
When we got back to the car, we moved it on to Riggs' car park and got some lunch from the snack van there. Simon gave his cheeseburger a big thumb's up. We then went into Rigg's. Simon bought a Venus Fly Trap which he named Frank. and some sunflower seeds. I bought a few border plants. We also queued to look around the pet shop which wasn't really worth the wait.
We then went to Morrison's to do the week's shopping before returning home.
