6 Sunday 8th March 2020 Borsdane Wood
For my choice that week I decided to do another lucky dip which produced a good weather option of a walk from an old guide called Mike's Hikes, a series of walks in the Bolton area and a bad weather option of Clitheroe. As Simon was invited to a birthday trip on Saturday we switched the trip to Sunday,
The weather was good so we went walking. I chose the first walk in the book titled "Beautiful Bordane" near Hindley because it was new ground to me and could be easily reached by train.
We set off on the 12:09 to Bolton and had a short wait for the Wigan train. The announcer on the train caused us some concern by announcing the next stop would be Wigan when we were at Westhoughton but it did stop at Hindley as it was supposed to.
The station at Hindley has been impressively landscaped by a group called The Friends of Hindley Station.
Despite the book being 39 years old, the instructions were easy to follow and it made a nice change to feel too warm in my coat. Simon complained about the smell at High Borsdane Farm which was a bit like sweaty socks.. The ground was a bit wet in places but nowhere impassable. Part of it followed a disused railway line.
At the halfway point, it started raining but as the route was now relatively sheltered in the Borsdane Valley it wasn't too bad. Simon enjoyed finding the carvings on the trees .
The least enjoyable part was walking into the centre of Hindley when the rain came on heavy. We sheltered in a phone booth and were surprised to find it still in working order.
We looked around for somewhere to get a drink but the only option was Tesco's cafe. We had a pot of tea each. Simon had some nuggets and chips while I had a teacake. Simon bought an Eminem CD Music To Be Murdered By there but queuing at the tills there meant we had to wait for a later train.
Simon jumped off the train at Bolton and his phone fell out of his pocket. He was upset that the screen cracked but I reassured him his mum wouldn't be too mad.
