20 Saturday 13 June 2020 Whirlaw and Bride Stones
I picked one of the walks nearest Todmorden so we could explore Todmorden market afterwards.
We parked up at Lydgate near the post office. We were immediately disappointed to find it wasn't open. I had forgotten to pack the usual bottle of Lucozade so I warned Simon we'd have to ration the drinks in our flasks. The route soon picked up The Calderdale Way past Stannally where I'd walked with Mick Smithson in the old days . I didn't remember it as so punishingly steep though. We had a good rest when the ground levelled out at Whirlaw
It was pretty misty. We could see into Todmorden but not Stoodley Pike. There were quite a few people up there including a very tasty girl in a flimsy top. She must have distracted me because I lost the route near that point but was able to recover it near Windy Harbour.
We moved on to Bride Stones. There were a number of cars parked nearby. We had our snack stop there and had to placate a hungry dog called Iggy with some crisps.
The weather seemed to change the moment we got up. The mist lifted, the breeze evaporated and it became very warm.We followed the path off the moor to Kebs where I was sad to note that The Sportsmans Inn was no longer a pub. I had a few good meals there. The route then followed the road for a mile which was quite dispiriting in the heat.
We eventually escaped it and had a look at Mount Cross. We then followed the Pennine Bridleway for about a mile.Simon started to complain that his foot was hurting.
We dropped down to Orchan Rocks which Simon recognised from last summer when his class went to the nearby Robin Wood Activity Centre .They'd done bouldering there .Simon rang his old schoolfriends Josh and Molly about it.
As we resumed our walk Simon was very surprised by how close he came to a squirrel on the wall. He remembered most of our route down from the school trip.
When we got back to the car, I felt very faint and had to sit down on the verge for five minutes to recover.
We moved on to Todmorden but it was around 3.15 and most of the traders had packed up.Nor could we find anywhere to get something to eat.We moved on to the burger stall at Gordon Rigg's followed by the ice cream van.
I did the weekly shop at Asda's Rawtenswtall then we returned home.
