21 Saturday June 20th 2020 Great Rock and Jumble Hole Clough
Another lovely day and another walk from the Paul Hannon book.
This one started from the car park at Lobb Mill picnic site a mile or so out of Todmorden. Just beyond is another layby with a snack van operated by a lady called Katie. Simon had a cheeseburger and I had a Steak Canadian. We then climbed the zig zag path to Rodwell End stopping to admire the views to Stoodley Pike. After that was a mile or so of farm lane and road walking.
At the point where we left the road to Cross Stone there was an isolated stone house. An old lady was watering the plants in her porch and when we waved at her she came out for a chat. She said she'd lived there for 72 years and was now 93. Apart from being a bit hard of hearing , she looked very well for it.She was very fed up of lockdown and wanted things to get back to normal. Her nearest neighbours were shopping for her but not really getting what she wanted.Simon told her of his plans for a band and she told him he had the looks for it. She told us to call again if we were passing.
Not long after that , we joined the Calderdale Way. We had a short stop where it crosses a stream then moved on to Great Rock. Simon climbed to the highest point; I stopped a little short. Simon had a conversation with two nice young ladies who were resting there about music ; one of them was wearing a Joy Division Unknown Pleasures T-shirt. After snacking there we moved on to Hippins Bridge and started descending Jumble Hole Clough.
We had a little stop at the ghostly ruins of Staups Mill then took the exciting path above the clough eventually returning to the Calder valley.
After crossing railway river and canal we took a path above the canal through a very pretty wood. Simon climbed the bank to have a go on a tree swing that had been set up there.
Eventually we returned to the towpath, ignoring closed signs , all the way back to Lobb Mill.
After stopping at a garage for a Solero we went to Asda Rawtenstall for the shopping.
