22 Saturday June 27 Limer's Gate and Crimsworth Dean

Despite  the  uncertain  weather  we  set  out  for  another  walk  from the Paul  Hannon  book. We  stopped  at  the  Corner  Shop,Stubbins  to  get  a  drink  and  Simon  had a  sausage  muffin.

We  parked  at  Pecket  Well  using  the  pub  car  park  with  the  landlord's  permission,to avoid  the  NT  charges  at Midgehole.  We  waited  until a  shower  passed  before  setting  out. It  started  raining  again  not  long  afterwards  but  we  sheltered  under  a  tree  and  missed  the  worst  of  it.  We  then  had  a  bright  interval  with  marvellous  views  as  we  climbed the moor  to  the  trig  point  at  High  Brown  Knoll.  I  could  see  that  Heptonstall  was  disappearing  into  a raincloud  and  told  Simon  it  would  be  unwise  to linger  there.

The  rain  hit  us  almost  straightaway.We  were going  to  try and  get  under  a  mushroom shaped  rock   but  there  was  a  rumble  of  thunder  and  Simon  wanted to get  off  the  moor so  we  moved on. However  the  rain  hit  us  so  hard  that  we  stopped  at  the  next  set  of  rocks and  wedged  ourselves  between  two  boulders  which  provided  some  moderate  protection. By  the  time  it  eased  up  we  were  soaked.

As  we  neared  the  Keighey  road  we  saw  a  bus  parked  up  in  a  remote  lay  by. This  cheered  Simon  up  but  it  moved  away  before  we  got  there  and  it   was  going  the  wrong  way  anyway. He  got very  down  as  we  continued  the  walk. He  cheered  up  a  bit  as  we  got  to Lumb Falls  though there  were  none  of  the  hoped-for  bathing  beauties  just a  lot  of  beer  bottles  which  are  turning  this  beauty  spot  into  a  slum.  The  local landowners  have  put  many  notices  up  here  saying  things  like    "Lumb  Falls  closed  due  to  changes  in  water  levels, broken  glass, fire  risk, coronavirus,  piranhas  etc".I made  the  last  one  up  but  you get  the  point.

Simon's mood  improved  as  we  took  a  lovely  path  down through  Crimsworth  Dean.We  had  a  longer  stop  at  Midgehole  before  tackling  the  steep  but  gorgeous  path  back  up  to  Pecket  Well.

We  drove  down  to  Hebden  Bridge,  parking  just  short  of  the  town  centre. Simon  waited  in  the  car  while  I  went  to get  some  food  from  the  street  vendors. Just  after  being  served,  there  was  the  heaviest  downpour  of   the  day  and  I  had  to  wait  in  a  doorway  until it  had  abated. we  ate  the food  - chicken  curry  for  me,nuggets  and  chips  for  Simon,before  we  drove  on  to  Asda  for  the  shopping.
