23 Saturday 4-Sunday 5 July 2020 Gorple and Widdop/Leeds
To celebrate a significant lifting of lockdown restrictions, we decided to make a weekend of it with our usual walk from the Paul Hannon book followed by a stay in Leeds.
We set off at our usual time and had a breakfast stop at the Corner Shop Stubbins where Simon had a sausage muffin and I had sausage and egg. It was raining pretty much all the way to the car park at Clough Foot but we decided we could cope with the drizzle. We had our first rest at Gorple Upper Reservoir. It was here that Simon decided he liked my "beanie" hat and commandeered it for the rest of the weekend.
We moved on to the Savile lunch hut where we were disappointed to find it padlocked. This had always been open on previous visits which were before Lord Savile's death in 2008. The padlocks are down to someone described as the "nouveau riche" new owner of the estate on the geograph.org website.
We moved on to Gorple Upper Reservoir where we left the easy track behind and climbed past some impressive rock formations where Simon battled against the wind to touch the highest point. From there we moved on to Gorple Gate where we had a snack stop and saw the majority of other people, nearly all cyclists.
We descended Gorple Gate to a great view over Widdop Reservoir then took a narrow path to the far end of the reservoir which was very marshy in places and left us with wet feet. From there it was an easy but fairly dispiriting trudge in the rain, first alongside the reservoir where we saw many Canada geese, and then the road.
We moved on to Hebden Bridge where Simon.s spirits were revived by chicken nuggets and chips from our favourite food stall ( I had salt and pepper strips) . The vendor now recognised me and chatted about where we'd come from.
We then drove through Halifax and along the A58 to Leeds, an untroubled journey listening to the football commentary. We had some difficulty finding the right car park but eventually we got there. Simon changed into his trainers which entailed a tug of war with his tight socks.
We then hauled our bags to the Travelodge on Vicar Lane. Simon loved our room which was bright and clean. We showered and watched some TV before heading into the city for something to eat. We eventually settled on Five Guys and enjoyed burger and chips there. It was fairly quiet in the city with no sign of trouble. We then walked back to the hotel for TV and video games before bed.
We woke fairly early then dressed for a breakfast hunt. After making enquiries at a Sainsburys Local, we found our way to a Wetherspoons at Beckett Bank. It was nice to be able to go into a pub again but Simon was disappointed that his bacon butty was nearly cold. I let him have most of my sausage then bought him a cookie at Leeds Station.
We returned to the hotel to pack and check out . We dumped our bags in the car and had another look round the city. Simon was disappointed that a record shop he spotted wasn't open but CEX was and he was happy to get three CDs there. We moved on to the Cathedral but that was still closed.
We then drove out of the city centre to Meanwood and Headingley where I showed Simon some student haunts including the KFC where we had lunch.
It was then time to head for home with a stop at Asda Rochdale to do the week's shopping.
