27 Saturday 1 August 2020 Heptonstall
Although we'd already walked part of the route on the High Gate trip, I thought the first walk in the book around Heptonstall was still worth doing. We called at Katie's van . between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge for some breakfast . I put an order in before noticing she was cash only but she let us have our food on credit.
We parked at Heptonstall where two walking parties seemed to be arguing about social distancing. Our route took us past a playpark so inevitably Simon wanted to have a play there. It was wonderfully sited with views over Hebden Bridge.
We took the Calderdale Way out of the village but branched off it soon for a wonderful high level path through the woods above Hebden Water. Halfway along, the signs indicated we'd entered Hardcastle Crags but there was no change in the quality of the scenery.
We eventually left the woods at the car park at Clough Hole where we commandeered the picnic table for our snack stop. We had a look at the art installation there.
From there we climbed up to the stabilised ruin at Clough Head where Simon tried some unusual camera angles.
We then went onto Heptonstall Moor. Although not mentioned in the book. I realised we were going to pass close by High Gate Farm. We stopped there to top up our provisions.
From there we took the Pennine Way down to Hebble Hole, then the Calderdale Way back to Heptonstall along the top edge of the Colden Valley. I felt dizzy and had to stop for a sedentary rest in the fields. Once revived, we carried on, passing some bilberry bushes where we found a few edible berries. Simon loved the views.
When we got back to the village, we went for a drink in The Cross Inn. Simon had a bowl of chips as well. We chatted to some of the locals there. On the way back to the car, Simon had another short stop in the playground. We then moved on to Asda Rawtenstall for the shopping.
