31 Saturday 29 August 2020 Gathurst to Parbold
When we got up, the weather was good enough to do another Paul Hannon walk. However Simon needed a new blazer for school which entailed a trip to Whittakers. It made more sense then to carry on where we left off the week before. Unfortunately Whittakers have adopted a pre-booking policy which must be costing them hundreds of pounds in lost custom. How's anyone supposed to know about it ? Why not just have a queue outside ? To make matters worse it was completely empty at the time with the three assistants chatting at the front of the shop.
So we moved on in a not entirely good mood. We found our way to Gathurst after a little uncertainty as it's not well signed. We parked at the station then walked down to the canal.
We set off towards Appley Bridge and soon passed under the M6.
Shortly afterwards , we passed a wheat field which fascinated Simon as he hadn't seen one before. A makeshift barrier said keep out but someone obviously ignored it.
Not long after that , we came to a swing bridge and as I explained its purpose to Simon a couple of boats approached. A nice lady called Louise got off to operate it and allowed Simon to help her.
The boats moved on but we caught them up at the next lock where we helped open the gates
We had a snack stop then enjoyed the pretty rural stretch from Appley Bridge to Parbold where Simon wanted to call it a day.
We had a 40 minute wait for the train so we went in The Railway for a drink. Simon liked the throne-like chair.
We caught the train back to Gathurst after a struggle with the temperamental ticket machine . We then drove to Wigan where Simon bought Queen's Sheer Heart Attack and then went to The Moon Under Water for tea. We did the shopping at Asda before returning home.
Looks amazing and well done helping out
