From a range of destinations, Simon chose Morecambe for our next weekend away. After some deliberation, we booked ourselves in at St Winifred's Hotel on the northern side of the town.
By the time we'd finished packing on the Friday morning, it was nearly lunchtime so we went to The Cotton Keer in Bolton for lunch. Simon had fish and chips; I had chicken tikka masala. We then had a trouble free drive up to Overton for a walk I'd done before, to Sunderland Point and back.
Simon was very taken by the solitude of the area as we headed through the fields, taking one or two wrong turns and getting our feet wet in a marsh just before the village. Simon soon forgot about this as he was intrigued by the isolated situation of the village, the derelict boats and the fact it gets cut off for a number of hours each day.
We then rounded Sunderland Point itself, noting a ship coming into Heysham Port.
Moving north we came to Sambo's Grave, the last resting place of an eighteenth century slave boy who died shortly after his arrival in England. The site had changed a lot since my last visit in 2007, with new walling, stone benches, the beginnings of a tree-lined walkway, a strange beehive like structure and what is either a bird hide or exhibition shed. Doubtless this is all some woke-y appropriation of the site but the simple poignancy of the spot has been lost.
After that was a long-ish plod through the cattle grazing on the salt marsh to civilisation with the caravan park at Alderley Edge where we had light refreshments at the beach shop.
It started to look like rain but it held off as we worked our way back to Overton. I bought some home made jam from one of the few houses there.
By this time it was after six so we drove straight to the hotel. Our host was a genial Asian guy who directed us to the parking at the back. The hotel looked a bit grim from the rear but the room was clean and tidy and occupied by three butterflies. We managed to usher two out of the window but the other clung to the window for the duration of our stay. The only other guests we spotted were a group of ageing mods.
We walked into town for dinner that evening, settling for The Station Inn where I had a gammon steak and Simon had chicken strips. We called at the local Spar for some room nibbles.
Next morning we drove into town for breakfast. The Station wasn't open so we went to Rita's Cafe nearby. Simon had forgotten to bring his coat so I bought him a new fleece from the market. We also bought some CDs from the outdoor stalls.
We then drove up to Happy Mount Park, parking near a beach structure.
Simon had a play on the zip wire with some girls then had a turn on the swing boats.
After some refreshments, we had a game of adventure golf which was very close. I won by two shots.
After that we moved on to Heysham. We called in at the heritage centre then moved on to St Peters Church and St Patrick's chapel with its rock-cut graves.
I had told Simon what a great viewpoint it was but unfortunately clouds were hiding most of the Lake District fells .
After exploring the cliff tops we returned to the village for something to eat at a nice cafe. We then returned to the hotel to chill but Simon got bored so we set off for a walk along the promenade. We found a sculpture representing the Lakeland fells you could see on a better day.
Simon had a play on an artificial mound.
We posed around the statue of Eric Morecambe to the amusement of a couple walking by.
We then went to The Station for dinner but it was fully booked and we settled for KFC next door. We took a taxi back to the hotel where I watched the Carabao Cup highlights before turning in.
Next morning, we checked out of the hotel and headed down to Rita's for breakfast again. We then returned to the market where Simon bought a Star Wars painting and we bought a pendant for Mum.
The original plan was to spend a few hours in Lancaster but Simon wanted a rematch at Happy Mount park. He then had a couple of rides on the miniature train and revisited the zip wire where we met the same girls who came from Whitworth.
By the time we'd finished there, the trip to Lancaster became just a lunch stop at Witherspoon's when we eventually found it.
We then stopped at Garstang for some groceries on our way back.
