Pinning  our  hopes  on  the  rain  stopping , we  set  out  to  continue  the  walk  aborted  the  previous  Saturday. We  parked  the  car  beside  Egerton  Park  and  bought  some  breakfast  there. We  then  waited  inside  the  car  for  the  rain  to  stop,  saying  we'd  give  up  if  it  was  still  raining  at  11.00. I  got  out at  10.53 and  it  seemed  to  be  stopping  so  we  set  out. Simon  took  one  or  two  pictures  on  the  route. We  got  the  last  bit  wrong in  navigational  terms  but  all  in  all  it  was  a  successful  venture.  Ther...

55 Thursday 18th February 2021 Adlington to Chorley

With  news  about  the  coronavirus  now  shifting  towards  some  relaxation  of  the  outdoor  exercise  restrictions  we  felt  emboldened  to  go  a  little  further  afield  and  went  to  Adlington  to  continue  our  canal  walk.  We  parked  near  the  Jubilee  playground  in  Adlington  where  Simon  had  a  little  play  while  I  went  off  to  a  cafe  to  get  some  takeout  breakfast.  The  weather  forecast  over-delivered  in  that  it  not  only  stopped  raining  but  it  was  bright  and  mild.  We  started  off  walking  through  White  Bear  Marina. This week we decided to start our exploration of the public footpaths in Egerton. We parked off Blackburn Rd and did our first bit of filming near Eagley FC. There we met my friend Phil Chadbond and his wife. After that we headed up Longworth Lane where  Simon took  some  nice  pictures. Further  on,  we met the Parker family who we knew from school. They warned us of an icy patch to come. I managed to avoid it but Simon chose his own route and slipped, injuring his knee and hip. After completing our next path on to Longworth Rd, where we met a former teaching assistant from Simon's school, he wanted to call it a day. We walked down Blackburn Road calling at Crabtree's for something to eat. Simon lost his scarf but we managed to retrieve it. The link to the footage we shot will appear here in due course.

53 Sunday 7th February 2021 The Croal

We again postponed to Sunday due to the promise of better weather. We parked at Burnden again then walked down the valley across Raikes Lane, back up to Manchester Road then down into Moses Gate Country Park where the scenery got much better. Simon had a play in the playground then we bought an ice cream from the van more because it was there rather than really wanting one. We then had a lovely wal down to Nob End to see the Croal join the Irwell. We then had to retrace our steps back to Farnworth Bridge to get the bus. The footage we shot can be seen here

Simon hurt his knee on the Friday so we postponed till the Sunday to give it a chance to recover. We parked at Burnden and went to Subway for some breakfast. We then walked to Burnden viaduct but Simon was still in pain so we drove to some locations where road bridges crosssed the river then went to KFC in Farnworth for some lunch. The footage we shot can be seen here.

The weather was horrible on the Saturday so we went on the Sunday instead. We again parked at Topps Way and followed the Croal through the town centre but we didn't venture through the underground tunnels. We were surprised to find Burger King open so we lunched there. We finished at Burnden Viaduct and rather lazily caught a bus back. The footage we shot can be seen here.

We decided to continue our exploration of the Croal. This was the first opportunity to test out our new microphone .We parked in the own centre then walked to Gilnow to pick up the river again. We followed it through to Queen's Park where Simon had a long play while I got cold. We then walked into the town centre finishing at the Victoria Hall. We went to Subway for lunch and ate it in the car. The footage we shot can be seen here

48 Saturday 2 Jan 2021 The Tonge

Image
With another national lockdown now imposed , we decided to stay local and confine ourselves to Bolton. We decided to go to Paul's Chippy for lunch and then complete our exploration of the river Tonge. Unfortunately he was closed so we went to one furher up Bury Road. We ate our lunch in the car then parked at Leverhulme Park. Simon had a play in the playground before we followed the river through Darcy Lever and on to its merge with The Croal by which time it was snowing. We walked back to the car and went home. The footage we shot can be seen here.
