69 Friday 21 May - Sunday 23 May 2021 Woolley Edge weekend
With restrictions on overnight stays lifted, I chose the cheapest option, two nights in the Travelodge at Woolley Edge services ( southbound ) on the M1. This allowed filming at two Yorkshire castles.
We set off about an hour after Simon returned from school. We drove through Rochdale, Littleborough and Ripponden to Huddersfield where we stopped for tea. We parked at the retail park near the John Smith's Stadium in Huddersfield. There was too long a wait for a table at Pizza Hut so we went to Subway instead. After that we drove on to Wooley Edge which took about 45 minutes after a couple of wrong turns.
The services was fairly quiet throughout our stay but perhaps it always is being the first one on the motorway. I got some provisions from M & S and then we chilled out watching Terminator -Genisys ( not great ) in our room.
On the Saturday morning we went to Burger King for breakfast then watched a bit of TV before setting off for Sandal Castle. We found it easily enough. We had elevenses at the cafe before doing our filming.
After that we drove into Wakefield and parked near Westgate station. After a quick look round the town, we bought a ticket for Pontefract . The guy behind the desk sold us a ticket to the wrong station so we had a longer walk to the castle than necessary. This and the expiry time on our parking ticket made the filming a bit rushed so we probably re-do it when we return for the cellar tour.
When we got back into Wakefield, we had time for another look around. We found a record shop where Simon bought a couple of LPs
We returned to the Travelodge after a mini- adventure getting lost on the country lanes. Simon had a burger meal for tea while I went for the healthier option of a sandwich from M & S. We watched The Chase on Challenge TV before turning in for the night.
On Sunday morning we went to Gregg's for breakfast. After packing our things up we moved on to Yorkshire Sculpture Park which is just the other side of the motorway. We had a good walk round the park and had elevenses at one of the cafes there.
Our favourite piece was Damien Hirst's rather risque The Virgin Mother.
We stayed there until the early afternoon then moved on to Huddersfield where I bought an external hard drive. We were hoping to re-visit The Wimpey for tea but it was closed so we had to settle for KFC instead. We then drove home.
