On the previous Friday, Simon and I did a sometimes arduous 6 mile walk in Calderdale in the heat so we decided to take an easier option on the Saturday and returned to the Leeds-Liverpool canal.
We parked up at Stourton St, Rishton, returning to the spot where we abandoned a very wet walk on May Day bank holiday. Today it was nice and sunny.
When we got to the road bridge nearest to the centre of Rishton, I suggested we come off to get a cold drink
We went to a sandwich shop which also did chips so Simon had a tray of chips as well. We sat on a stone bench by the canal where we met a guy who was cycling to Glasgow. Simon fed some of his spare chips to the ducks.
We moved on as the East Lancashire landscape opened out.
The canal curved towards Church.
Not long after this, disaster. Simon realised he didn't have his pack on. As it only contained provisions, I made the decision that we should carry on with the walk and look for it at the end. The bench at Rishton seemed the likeliest spot as our only real stop. On the outskirts of Accrington we passed some old coke kilns.
This was a prelude to a more industrialised stretch . We also passed an interesting mural.
The landscape became more rural again.
Shortly after the towpath switched sides, we came to the halfway point on the canal
We called it a day at Clayton-le-Moors about a mile further on, where the towpath switched sides again.
We caught the bus back to Rishton. We had an exhaustive search around the bridge and about a mile further on but there was no sign of the rucksack. We enquired at a few shops but it hadn't been handed in. It's gone.
On the way back we had late lunch at the Barlow Institute which was very nice, better than I expected.
