76 Saturday 10 July 2021 Use Hearing Protection , Manchester
Simon set quite a challenge for this trip, wanting a sightseeing trip with a musical connection. Doing some Googling, we settled on the Use Hearing Protection exhibition about the early days of Factory Records at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. Simon wasn't actually familiar with their output but was attracted to the promise that you could do some remixing if you brought your own headphones.
We had some breakfast at the Witherspoon's in St Peter's Square before heading down to the museum. I explained how Factory's logo came about from a hearing protection sign
The artefacts were displayed in order according to Factory's famous cataloguing system. Here's FAC1 the poster that kicked it all off.
Here's the infamous sandpaper sleeve for a Durutti Column record , the "sleeve that destroys your record collection ! "
The most poignant exhibit was this handwritten note by Ian Curtis griping about the mix on Closer.
Simon soon found his way to the Korg synth.
