82 Saturday 28 August 2021 The Rum Story, Whitehaven
Simon's next choice took place within the framework of a family holiday in Keswick. Four years earlier, Simon had been spooked by the sound effects in the Rum Story museum in Whitehaven and curtailed the visit. He now wanted to confront his demons by a return visit.
Simon, Julie and I drove to Whitehaven and parked upbefore locating the museum on foot. Whitehaven remains an odd mix of the impressive and the grotty , existing side by side.
We found our way to the museum which I think is slightly pricey. You get a discount if you purchase a bottle of rum but I'd have preferred a reduced admission price. The experience starts at the Victorian office of the Jeffersons which was found to be largely intact when the museum project started in the late nineties which tells you a lot about the town's industrial decline.
Some of the displays are a bit racey.
We soon got to the slavery section which had upset Simon before but he was OK this time round.
It got more light hearted again.
We went down to the harbour area to look for somewhere for lunch but didn't find anywhere and ended up in Subway.
We then drove to Moresby to do some filming.
The results can be viewed here. The Hayes footage was filmed on the same day.
