93 Saturday 13th November 2021 Manshead End

 It  was  my  choice  of  trip  and  I  chose  a  little  walk  in  Calderdale  before  going  to  football  in  the  afternoon. I  devised  a  little  circular taking  in  the  summit  of  Manshead End  above  Ripponden. It  was  opened  up to  the public  by  the  creation  of  permissive  paths  in  the  eighties  but  I'd  never  actually  been  there. I  bought  Simon  a  new pair  of  walking  boots  from  Millett's  on  the  way.

We  parked  at  Sykes  Gate,  just  off  the  B6138. It  was  a  lovely  day for  November.

There  were  lovely  sweeping  views  from  the  start.

We  briefly  joined  the  Calderdale  Way  visiting  a  WWII  bunker , part  of  a  decoy  scheme  to  lure  the  Luftwaffe  away  from  the  populated  towns  of  WEst  Yorkshire.

Great  Manshead  Hill  loomed  ahead, its  long  whaleback  ridge  p-romising  a  fairly  easy  ascent.

Simon  wanted  a  stop  at  some  rocks  before  we  reached  the  summit.

It  wasn't  much  longer  to  the  summit.

There  was  a  splendid  view  towards  Halifax

There  was  also  a  little  shelter  on  the  summit.

There  was  a  lovely  view  over  Baitings  Reservoir

The  way  down  was  a  bit  rough, particularly  in  a  hollow  which  was  very  wet. 

The  walk  down  the  B6138  wasn't  very  enjoyable  as  there  were  no  real  verges  to  step  into  and  time  was  against  us. "Lumch"  had  to  be  a  quick  vist  to  the  Willbutts  Lane  chippy  just  before  kick-off. The  match  was  an  entertaining  2-2  draw  with  Leyton  Orient.
