97 Saturday 11th - Sunday 12th December 2021 Chester weekend

 This  was  the  trip  that  nearly  didn't  happen. We  were  booked  in  for  two  nights  at  YHA  Chester  Trafford  from  Friday  10th   but  I  had  a  bad  night  on the  Thursday  and  was  off  sick  on  the  Friday. By  the  evening I  still  wasn't  feeling  well enough to  drive  so  I  rang  the  hosteland  said  something  had  come  up  and  we'd  check  in  early  on  Saturday  morning.

We  got  up  early  on  Saturday  and  I  just  about  felt  well  enough  to  go. I  was  very  relieved when  we  pulled  into  the  drive  at  the  hostel. The  girl  at  the  desk  couldn't  have  been  more  helpful  and  took  me  to  our  chalet-style  dorm. We  were  just  in  time  to  claim  our  booked  breakfasts  which  were  served  without  any  complaint.


We  then  drove  into  Chester and  parked  up. The  weather  was  very  unpromising  but  we  did  the  wall  circuit  making  full  use  of  any  sheltering  opportunities.


















After  we'd  finished  the  wall  circuit,  we  went  looking  round  a  couple  of  record  shops  before  Simon  decided on  his  purchase  ( Portishead . We  then  went  looking  for  lunch. Simon  decided  on  a  cafe  with  an  open  terrace  looking  onto  the  main  shopping  street. It  had  heaters  but  they  weren't  very  effective. After  lunch  we  had  a  look  round  the  Cathedral. 






I  was  pretty  shattered  by  this  point  so  we  returned  to  the  hostel  where  I  crashed  out  for  a  couple  of  hours.

 
When  it  turned  5,  we  went  to  the  games  room  where  we  played  a  few  games  of  pool.





After  that , we  went  to  a  nearby  Toby  Carvery  for  tea.  When  we  got  back  we  went  in  the  lounge  for  a  bit  but  there  was  hardly  anyone  else  staying  there.  An  older  couple  checked  in  late  that  evening  but  we  didn't  speak  to  them  until  breakfast the  next  morning.

Fortunately  the  weather  was  much  improved  on  the  Sunday  and  we  were  able  to  film  at  Beeston  Castle.


  
After  that  we  drove  into  Warrington  for  something  to  eat  at  KFC. Then  we  went  home.

 Having  got  the  bit  between  his  teeth, Simon  wanted to finish  the  towpath  with  the  final  section  into  Sowerby  Bridge.. This  was  a  direct  repeat  of  a  trip  from  the  classic  era  in  January 1980.  We  drove  to  Hebden Bridge, stopping  at  Nutty's  Butty's  along  the  way. 284 Saturday 13th September 2025 Wainhouse Tower

 This  one was a genuine hangover from the "Classic" LTS period.  I always wanted to go inside Wainhouse Tower or at least do the history trail around it  but we never got round to it in the old days, This was brought home by the surprise discovery of our  draft trips programme for 1979  within the pages of the history trail booklet when I dug it out ( although ironically Wainhouse Tower was not on that programme). As  the climb up the Tower had to be pre-booked, we left plenty of time to get there . We drove to Halifax  and parked up nearby.  We were just over an hour early so after checking the exact route from the car to the Tower, we started doing the history trail. 286 Saturday 27th September 2025 Wycoller Country Park

 This  was my  choice although necessitated by our YouTube schedule. We  drove to Wycoller Country Park  and  the video we filmed can be seen here. After that, we walked a route from Paul Hannon's "Walks In Bronte Country" . This  took us past  the  rocky outcrop of Foster's Leap.  There was a good view over to Boulsworth Hill. Simon posed on the rocks. We passed the  sadly now closed and  converted Herder's Arms and walked along the road to Haworth  for  three quarters of a mile. A  track to the right dropped us  down  into  the valley and we made quick progress to the ancient bridge where we did some additional filming.  We  then passed the picnic site on the right. As the tea room in Wycoller has now closed we drove to a cafe in Trawden for lunch. Then we drove home.
