115 Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th April 2022 Haworth weekend
Our latest weekend away saw us based at Haworth YHA. We stopped at the Village Chippy in Stubbins for tea and got some drink and biscuits from the Corner Shop. We got to the hostel around 8pm.
We had breakfast at the hostel which was good. The warden helpfully printed out a timetable for the Worth Valley railway for us. We walked down to Haworth station to catch the train to Keighley.
We switched over to the mainline station for the train to Skipton. We headed for Skipton Castle. The video we shot there is now on YouTube.
We had a closer look at the engine when we got to Keighley.
After the castle, we had lunch at an Italian restaurant nearby which was good. We then went to a record shop but it wasn't much cop. We then took the train back to Keighley and looked for a record shop there. We found it and Simon purchased a 12 inch of Blue Monday.
We had a bit of a wait for the next train to Haworth and so pottered around the station. The waiting room had an antique ticket machine.
We watched the engine detatch and move to the front of the train.
It didn't have to use the turntable.
We rode the train back to Haworth then walked back up to the hostel. We played pool and then watched Road Trip on DVD. After that it was time for something to eat so I drove back into Haworth where there was a Chinese takeaway. We ate our food ( pretty average ) in the members' kitchen where we befriended a mixed race family. Simon made friends with the two boys, one of whom was called Stefan and they had a few games of pool before it was time for bed. I surprised a girl cleaning her teeth in the bathroom obviously not realising it was shared with us. A shame she wasn't taking a shower !
We had breakfast again at the hostel. We chatted to a nice girl who worked at Hawkshead Youth Hostel at the next table. We then started readying for our departure. We met a cute black cat in the car park before leaving. We drove down to a church in Haworth for Mass. We were made very welcome and the home-made cakes after the service were terrific. I was quite surprised that the young woman from the choir who talked to us had never heard of Kate Bush.
After that we started driving over to Barrowford for a walk along the Leeds-Liverpool canal but the road was closed and so I opted for a walk up to Top Withens instead. We parked at Penistone Hill Country Park near the quarries.
We then went across the Bronte Bridge.
Simon was inspired by a passing runner to take the opposite bank as a sprint. Now Top Withins was visible ahead.
When we got there we went into the shelter to get out of the wind.
The views were magnificent as ever.
It was soon time to move on.
On the way back we passed the advanced ruins of Middle Withins.
