124 Friday 24th - Sunday 26th June 2022 Southport
It was quite a struggle to find suitably priced accommodation options for this weekend but there was a good deal ( or so I thought ) at a hotel in Southport.
The Scarisbrick Hotel was on Lord St , the main shopping area and had very little parking ( to be fair we were warned about this ). The offhand guy behind the desk suggested some overnight street parking behind the hotel but this was all taken too so we used a P & D, paying until 8am. The hotel was quite old-fashioned and the room was nice but there was a catch.
It overlooked a very noisy nightclub.
Nevertheless, I was up in time to take the car and find some street parking ( some distance away ). I walked back and we had the buffet breakfast which was OK but nothing sensational.
We had tickets for Pleasureland but it didn't open until 10am so we went for a walk around the pier and the Marine Lake.
Simon said it was a bit too rattly and had actually hurt him, We decided to leave Pleasureland and go to two attractions outside. We went to the Ferris Wheel first. The views were excellent.
We then went on the Pleasureland Express. Our experience ( and it was one ! ) can be viewed here
Drenched, we walked back to the hotel. When the rain eased off, I went to retrieve the car. We then went for the buffet dinner which again was OK but not fabulous. In the evening we went for a little walk along the promenade.
That night, the noise was even worse. Even when the night club closed, there was noise on the streets into the early hours, As a result, I overslept and was late getting to the P & D. There was no ticket and I paid for another hour on the car park. We had breakfast at Wetherspoon's after a chippy cafe failed to live up to its advertised opening times.
We checked out and went to Mass in Soutport having some difficulty in locating the church. We then drove to Formby Dunes and started a walk I'd done some years before.
After a difficult start where the path was very unclear, I lost interest in completing it and suggested we catch a train back from Ainsdale station. We amused ourselves on the long walk from Freshfield station by throwing twigs at each other. When we got back to the reserve we had a wander round looking for the red squirrels but we didn't see any.
We stopped for tea at a pub in Thornton which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip.
