160 Sunday 12th February 2023 Rochdale Canal ( Castlefield to Dean Lane )
Simon needed to take a lot of photographs for his GCSE course and we decided that going into Manchester and starting to walk the Rochdale Canal towpath would give him plenty of subjects.
We had to get off the train at Bolton and take a rail replacement bus. Unfortunately the one waiting had just broken down so we had a while to wait.
We went to Gregg's for a light lunch rather than waiting in the cold. We eventually got into Manchester and took the tram to the Castlefield stop.
From there we made our way to the start of the Rochdale Canal.
We noted the original canal offices building.
There was a lot of new street furniture on the city centre section since my last visit, like this unicorn on the left.
I was quite relieved that the dodgy subterranean section under Piccadilly was shut off and we had to access the canal again via the archway on Dale Street.
We soon passed Victoria Mill in Miles Platting.
Part of the canal was drained so there was no navigation on this stretch. Though there were other people using the towpath , the dreary surroundings and wintry temperature made it a melancholy stroll.
Simon noted the outdated signage for Dean Lane station (now Newton Heath on the Metrolink) and wanted to end the walk there and visit HMV before it closed.
We did that then made our way to Victoria for the bus. I was nearly knocked over by a fleeing shoplifter near Exchange Square. When we got back to Bolton, there was a 40 minute wait for the next replacement bus and we made the foolish decision to walk on to Hall i'th Wood station rather than wait. I had misjudged the distance and we had to get an ordinary bus home from Tonge Moor Road.
