161 Sunday 19th February 2023 Whittle-le-Woods

 This  was  my  choice  , a  six  mile  circular  walk  not  too  far  away. The  walk  started  off  from  Whittle-le-Woods  and  we  had  a  little  difficulty  identifying  the  starting  point  from  the  leaflet
  we  were  using. Eventually  we  matched  things  up  and  identified  the  Duke  of  York  canal  basin.

The  first  part  of  the  route  passed  a  community  garden.

There  was  then  a  short  section  through  a  wood  passing  an  old  lime  kiln.

We  then  crossed  over  the  M6.

There  was  a  pleasant  stretch  through  the  fields  with  excellent  views.

When  we  reached  Denham  Quarry,  I  started  to  recognise  the  terrain  from  walks  with  the  Hike  On  Lancashire  group.

This  was  the  view  towards  Preston.

We  soon  saw  the  Leeds-Liverpool  Canal  ahead.

We  joined  the  towpath  for  the  walk  to  Johnson's  Hillock.

We  had  a  short  sit  down  there.

We  watched  a  barge  negotiate  one  of  the  locks. Simon  helped  open  the  gates.

At  the  canal  junction  we  took  the  Walton  Summit  branch.

This  soon  petered  out  and  after  escaping  some  inquisitive  horses  we  had  the  slightly  scary  subway  under  the  motorway.

After  that  there  was  another  tunnel as  the  canal  reappeared  but  we  wee  soon  back  in  Whttle-le-Woods. We  went  to  KFC  in  Chorley  for  tea,  where  I  manged  to  leave  my  coat  behind.
