166 Friday 24th to Sunday 26th March 2023 Dalton-in-Furness weekend
We found a reasonably priced B & B in Dalton-in-Furness for this weekend. It was very plesant, the young hosts were friendly and the breakfasts were ace.
On the Saturday we went to the South Lakes Animal Park. As you would expect we took more photos than usual so here we go.
A giraffe
A meerkat
The white rhinos
Zebras and rhinos ( in the distance )
The first lemur
Emus and kangaroos
The second lemur
A capybara ( Simon fed one of them )
The flamingoes
The honey badger ( at feeding time )
The baboons
The bears
The tamarins
The penguins
And finally, the tiger.
After lunching at the zoo, we returned to the B & B where I watched Rochdale capitulate to Crawley on Ifollow, a result that effectively consigned Dale to the National League and immediately manager Jim Bentley to the dole queue. We drove to a pub in Barrow for something to eat with me reflecting that, come August, Barrow would still be a league club despite their ridiculously poor facilities and we wouldn't.
The next day we were caught out by the clocks moving forward an hour and just had time to squeeze in breakfast before Mass in Dalton. We picked up some supplies in Dalton then drove to Millom to film a video at the castle. You can view it here :
We then moved on to Broughton-in-Furness for a walk. We parked in the market square near some stocks.
The terrain became less cultivated further on.
After a flat passage across moss land we had to climb Thornthwaite Latter Rigg.
We had our snack stop there then dropped down to Woodland Hall and from there into the quiet valley of Hawthwaite. After a road walk we went under the old Broughton-Torver railway.
The final part of the walk was a very pleant stroll through the grounds of Broughton Hall.
After finishing the walk, we drove into Kendal and had tea at the Miles Thompson pub. We then went home.
