167 Saturday 1 April 2023 Westmorland Heritage Walk; Beetham to Hutton Roof
This was my choice, a continuation of the Westmorland Heritage Walk from where we left it at Beetham back in January to Hutton Roof where we'd have to leave the route to pick up a bus at Lupton.
We took the train to Carnforth where we caught the bus to Beetham. I Played an April Fool's joke on Simon that I saw the bus coming early while we bought snacks at the local Co Op. We got off the bus near the local primary.
As the route went through fields there was a good view of Farleton Fell ahead.
Although the map was very clear there was an awkward gate to negotiate on the way to Holme.
One change since the book was published was the construction of an iron bridge replacing a level crossing over the West Coast main line.
After that was a section hemmed in by wire fences which had a very muddy section to negotiate. It's fine to keep people to the line of the path but you expect surface conditions to be maintained. After passing through Holme the route followed a short section of the Lancaster Canal which by this point is no longer navigable.
After a short road walk taking us under the M6 we took the bridleway to Farleton Fell. We stopped for our snack break once we reached the open fell side.
There were good views looking back towards the Lakes.
It started drizzling as we progressed towards Hutton Roof.
At Blasterfoot Gap we started descending towards the village. I slipped on the limestone path but wasn't injured.
When we got to Hutton Roof, I pointed out the surviving AA sign from the thirties.
Here we left the route and headed for the bus at Lupton. We took another break at the parish church.
Finally, we got to Lupton.
We had plenty of time to wait for the bus so we walked on to the next stop at The Plough Inn.We had a drink there and then waited for the bus by the metal horse outside.
around the time it was due we saw a bus heading in the opposite direction and I guessed correctly that we would have to wait until that had reached Kirkby Lonsdale and turned round so we had a long wait. The bus took us to Kendal. We had about a 50 minute wait for the next train. We walked into Kendal for something to eat and went in a chippy. We had a longer than expected wait and therefore a rushed meal before we headed back to the station to find the train had been cancelled so we had another 45 minute wait ! The rabbits hopping around the station consoled us.. The good thing about the next train was that it took us directly to Bolton so we caught up a lot of the time lost.
