171 Friday 28 April - Sunday 30 April 2023 Ravenstor weekend
For our next weekend away, we chose Ravenstor YHA in the Peak District.. The hostel is situated in the coutryside east of Buxton. We had tea at home before setting off. We made a few wrong turns but eventually found it. Richard, the Australian warden was very friendly.
After settling into our room, we watched a Peter Kay Live DVD in the common room.
The next morning we had breakfast at the hostel then had a short walk around the grounds before catching the bus into Buxton.
We paid our admission then waited for the next tour to start.
The river Wye flows through the cavern.
The orange tips to these stalagmites are due to iron pollutants in the water.
We made our way back to the town centre. We passed the famous Crescent and sampled the water from the fountain opposite it.
We had lunch at the local Wetherspoons then went to Pavilion Gardens where we made a video on the miniature railway which you can see here.
After finishing that we had a brief visit to the playground where Simon used the zipwire.
WE moved on to the boating lake where we took out a paddle boat. We had to come in early to ,make sure we caught the bus back to Ravenstor although it was also starting to rain.
We had our evening meal there which was fish and chips for Simon, lasagne for me. Both were very good. We then watched Moonraker in the lounge before returning to our room,
We had breakfast at the hostel next morning then established that we were OK leaving the car parked at the hostel while we went for a walk.
We set off from the hostel gates into jaw-droping scenery.
We then crossed a footbridge over the river Wye.
From there we climbed up to the Monsal Trail.
There was a great view of the limestone scar across the valley.
We passed above Litton Mill.
I didn't tell Simon we'd be going through tunnels so it would come as an eciting surprise. The first was Litton Tunnel.
We came out safe and sound.
At the other end of the tunnel was the remains of Monsal Dale station.
We finally left the Monsal Trail and dropped down to the hamlet of Cressbrook.
There was a short stretch of road walking to Cressbrook Mill.
At the mill, a footpath took us to the river bank.
We had a short chat with a group who were bouldering there. The riverside walk was very enjoyable.
We walked through Litton Mill, now a residential complex.
Shortly after this we saw the hostel looming above us and realised the walk was at an end. We got in the car and drove to Bakewell. We had fish and chips at a cafe above a chip shop.
Simon bought a couple of mini-figures at an outdoor market then we bought a bakewell pudding which he wanted to try. we sat near Bakewll Bridge for a short time.
