172 Saturday 6 May 2023 Knaresborough
I was hoping to do a walk but the weather looked a bit uncertain so I opted for Knaresborough , primarily to film our next castle. Apart from a brief visit to a pub before football in Harrogate, it was my first visit to the town since 1976.
We drove to Todmorden and caught the train to Leeds from there. While waiting for the train to Knaresborough I noted the very odd sight of Platform 0b which wasn't there when I was a student in Leeds.
We caught the train to the attractive station at Knaresborough.
The station buildings have been re-purposed and there's now a pub and an antiques shop on the platform.
The signs were a bit confusing and at first we headed off in the opposie direction for the castle. We walked up the main street and soon found the Wetherspoon's where we had lunch.
Simon liked the giant spider outside the pet shop.
We found our way to the castle. Simon was very taken with the view over the river Nidd.
We went in the museum before filming the castle itself. It's in the old court house as you can see.
As usual Simon tried on a hat.
So did I.
This shirt was said to have been worn by Sir Henry Slingsby, a Royalist Colonel, when he was beheaded in 1658 which accounts for the bloodstains.
After that we filmed a video of the castle which you can see here.
We bought some rather pricey snacks from the little market outside the castle then walked underneath it to get to the river.
We decided to visit Mother Shipton's Cave which meant going under the great viaduct.
Admission to the Mother Shipton attraction was a bit pricey. There were some children's features on the walk through the park.
The walk passed by a weir on the Nidd.
We came to the fanous Petrifying Well with its assortment of calcified objects.
This is a detail from either the Wishing well or the cave where Mother Shipton was born.
There was a carved angel nearby,
We had a look in the Museum ( which wasn't there on my visit with my Dad ) . There was an exhibit of objects donated to be calcified by celebrity visitors. These headphones were relinquished by walking man's crumpet Julia Bradbury.
After enjoying an ice cream from a stall in the park , we decided to make our way home. The connections were decent and we had a nice chat with a girl who worked in IT on the train from Leeds.
