179 Saturday 24th June 2023 Wansfell
This was my choice and followed on from a walk at Easter where we'd gone to Windermere and one of the trains was cancelled. We got a full refund of the ticket price so decided to head out there again. As it was nearly lunch time by the time we arrived in Windermere we had something to eat first. We found a nice cafe.
Our walk first took us to the renowned viewpoint of Orrest Head.
AS usual, there were a fair number of people up there.
We passed the farm at Far Orrest then took this very attractive path towards Troutbeck.
We visited the spot under the bridge over Trout Beck where we'd sheltered from a downpour earlier in the year.
It was now getting very warm and we stopped for a drink and some cake at the tea-room in the village.
As we puffed up Nanny Lane, there was a good view of Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick across the valley.
This was the view ahead to our destination, the summit of Wansfell.
The view over to Ill Bell improved.
On the final climb to the summit , Simon was a bit intimidated by a fell pony with its foal but they didn't bother us. We were soon at the top.
There was a great view of Red Screes and Kirkstone Pass.
Simon enjoyed chilling out at the summit.
We then followed the switchnback ridge to Wansfell Pike, a lower top but superior viewpoint .
After a decent rest, we set off down the re-made stone path to Ambleside, a steep descent that was hard on the knees.
We made a slight detour to view Stock Ghyll Force.
When we got to Ambleside we spotted a bus and began our journey back straight away.
