192 Saturday 14th October 2023 Westmorland Heritage Walk : Hutton Roof to Kirkby Lonsdale
This was my choice. With further eye surgery imminent, I knew this was the last chance to get a bit more of the Westmorland Heritage Walk done in 2023. We set off early and the trains connected well to Kendal. We caught the bus to Lupton and then had to do the road walk to Hutton Roof in reverse.
There was a splendid view over to Ingleborough.
We had a break at the parish church where we also had to don waterproofs due to the rain.
The onward route led through a series of fields with wonderful views.
The weather soon improved.
Simon found this stile a bit of a squeeze.
The guidebook is not very helpful when it comes to mileage so we arrived in Kirkby Lonsdale with plenty of time to kill. We went to a pub for lunch first then followed the town trail in the book.
This is the Royal Hotel where Queen Adelaide addressed a crowd from the balcony over the porch.
The highlight of the trail was undoubtedly the parish church. The Romanesque porch was added during Victorian restoration in 1866.
These arches and columns date from the early 12th century.
This doorway is also Norman though reconstructed.
There is a surviving Norman window in the south aisle.
The doorway to the west tower is the most impressive of the Norman doorways.
There is an octagonal gazebo in the churchyard.
The famous Ruskin's View over the river Lune just beyond the churchyard is currently fenced off due to fears of a landslip.
We continued on the trail through Swinemarket with its medieval market cross.
The trail finished at Devil's Bridge where we chilled out for a while.
We took a different route back to the town centre passing by this lovely stretch of riverside.
We eventually caught the bus though we got off at Oxenholme in the hope of catching an earlier train. I undid the advantage we achieved at Blackburn by not taking proper notice of the platform numbers and letting the first train back home depart without us.
