203 Friday 26th- Sunday 28th January 2024 Burton-in-Kendal weekend
This was an eventful weekend to say the least. Reliably, Burton's Travelodge was cheap so that was our pick agaiin. I had noticed some noises coming from underneath the car but wanted to get to pay day before taking it in. It was OK till we got to the slip road for the M6 then the steering started to wobble. I thought I might have popped a tyre so I pulled on to the hard shoulder and called the RAC. We got a very grumpy guy who drove it a very short distance then said the front tyre was down and replaced it with the 50 mph max spare. We drove on but quickly realised that the problem wasn't fixed at all but he was gone. We came off at Preston, parked in a retail park and called the RAC again. This time they said they couldn't get to us till 11 o clock. We cancelled that and I tried to contact a friend in Preston with the idea of leaving the car at his house and getting a lift to the station for a train to Carnforth but the number I had was out of date. Simon then suggested going to Preston's Travelodge and trying to switch the booking. I reluctantly agreed and we went there. They were willing to do it but said it would cost an extra £120. I decided we'd struggle on along the A6. The noises were getting worse, particularly at roundabouts and we finally decided to pull into a pub car park near Garstang and call the RAC again. We had to wait until 2am for someone to come out. He correctly identified the problem as the wheel bearings on a rear tyre and said it was close to coming off. We agreed to leave the car there until Sunday and arrange a tow back to Bolton. Initially he said he could take us as far as Lancaster but then said he'd take us to Burton and we finally checked in at 3 am.
Not surprisingly we had a lie-in on Saturday before going to breakfast. It was wet which didn't augur well for the day .I arranged for a garage in Bolton to receive the car and fix it Monday. By the time we finished breakfast, it had stopped raining and we walked the short distance to the A6 for a bus to Kendal but I'd misunderstood the timetable and the bus ran throuh the villages on the other side of the motorway so we couldn't find a bus stop. This pheasant wasn't having a great time either.
Eventually we enquired at a car repair shop and a customer offered us a lift to Levens. There was a good view over to Farleton Fell
We were dropped off at Levens Hall and completed a video there. We then set out in search of Nether Levens Hall which took some time. We finally found it through Google Earth . The video we shot can be seen here.
We then walked back to Levens Hall where we had some refreshments then caught a bus into Kendal.
We visited the record shop then went to the Miles Thompson for tea. We then went to Mass in Kendal before catching the bus to Burton-in-Kendal. The lane back to the Travelodge was very dark and scary but we survived.
The next morning we had plenty of time to get breakfast and pack up before walking back to Burton-in-Kendal for the bus to Lancaster. As always Simon was reluctant to leave.
The walk back to the bus stop was a bit trying with all the luggage but at least the weather was good and there were good views from the bridge over the motorway.
The lane looked a lot more benign in the daylight.
The bus was on time as it trundled through to Lancaster and it connected well with the one to Garstang. We got off in the town centre and had a bit of a walk to the pub. At last we got there and were relieved to dump the luggage in the boot. We then called the RAC and predictably had a 2 hour wait. We had lunch at the pub then walked back into town. We noted this giant bear.
We then walked past a snooker club which said visitors welcome so we went in there for 45 minutes. I was pleased to get a three-ball break during the frame which I won.
When we got back to the pub, the RAC guy was waiting for us. He got the car onto the truck and drove us back to the garage at Bolton.
One last annoyance took place when a selfish neighbour stopped us from leaving the car in the most obvious place in case he needed a fridge delivered. What a wanker ! We then got a taxi back home.
