211 Saturday 31st March 2024 Westmorland Heritage Walk : Kirkby Lonsdale to Barbon
With the coming of British Summer Time, it was time to resume progress on the Westmorland Heritage Walk. This time, we took an early train to Lancaster then caught a bus to Kirkby Lonsdale, a long ride calling at all the little villages in the Lune valley. As the walk resumed from Devil's Bridge, Simon demanded sustenance from the burger van which he ate at one of the riverside picnic tables.
Simon soon took his coat off.
The countryside ahead looked terrific.
There was a good view of Kirkby Lonsdale looking back.
We soon arrived at Lower Casterton.
We had a rest at the village green.
The parish church was rather disparaged in the guidebook but looked reasonably attractive to us.
The route went past the long-established girls' school.
The route then went under the line of the disused Lancaster-Carlisle railway.
The scenery got better and better.
Unless someone got in the shot.
The next stile had a warning.
The next section of the route over Middleton Fell loomed over us.
Eventually the houses of Barbon came into view.
The route took us across a field to the parish church.
I pointed out the next section of the route to Simon.
We went into the Barbon Inn. They had stopped serving food for the afternoon but agreed to cook a basket of chips for Simon. There was a lovely old dog called Chaos there.
We had to turn around at Barbon because it has no bus service and walk back to Kirkby Lonsdale . We stuck to the road because the alternatives looked too complicated. We had tea at the Snooty Fox but didn't have time for dessert due to the bus times. THe journey home was uneventful.
