213 Sunday April 14th 2024 Huddersfield Narrow Canal : Ashton to Mossley
This was my choice, walking the first part of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal from Ashton-under-Lyne to Mossley. We drove to Ashton and had lunch at the cafe at Portland Basin Museum.
Outside, we met another YouTuber called Callum and swapped details. A noisy goose was also attracting some attention.
I'd always assumed this bridge marked a three way junction of the Peak Forest, the Ashton and the Huddersfield Narrow canals but I soon learned that the meeting of the latter two is some distance further east.
I think this may be the start of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
It wasn't long before the towpath became greener as we approached Stalybridge.
Not quite a Banksy.
We crossed the river Tame by an aqueduct.
We soon arrived in the centre of Stalybridge.
We stopped at the supermarket for a drink then continued. It quickly got more rural as we headed towards Carrbrook.
That didn't mean we avoided walking under a pylon that straddled the canal.
I recognised the derelict power station structures and railway sheds to the right from other Youtube videos.
Shortly afterwards we approached Scout Tunnel.
We got talking to a group of walkers on the other side of the canal who were avoiding it but we decided to walk through it.
We had a rest stop at the next lock.
It was soon time to leave the canal and head for the station at Mossley.
We had a short wait at Mossley then another at Stalybridge for the train to Ashton. I wasn't displeased by this as it gave me the chance to finally go into the famous Buffet Bar on the station platform. We had a drink there.
We then caught the train back to Ashton then walked through the town back to Portland Basin to pick up the car.
