This was my choice, a continuation of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath from Mossley to Diggle. Most of the route was a re-visit of a trip from the classic LTS era in 1978.
We caught the train to Mossley, including a quick change at Stalybridge. We found our way back to the place where we left off. Christchurch, Friezland loomed over and we soon reached the point where the earlier walk had started. I had brought along the original map and guide.
Shortly afterwards we saw this huge mill chimney.
The scenery got more attractive as we progressed.
There was a canal basin just past Greenfield station.
We soon arrived at Uppermill and the statue of Ammon Wrigley.
We had a break from the walk to look round Saddleworth Museum. Simon tried to work out the cogs.
There was a vintage car.
This is a Dobcross Loom.
Simon still likes dressing up.
There was some grumbling at the desk as some woman was grumbling at the fact that a model railway exhibition in the room upstairs was impeding access to paintings on the Saddleworth Arts Trail but there was nothing the woman behind the desk could do about it. We paid into the exhibition and looked round the exhibits, chatting to the guys from the Bolton Model Railway Society.

After some refreshment we returned to the canal. THere were plenty of ducks to be fed.
We went under the impressive Uppermill Viaduct.
Just after that we reached the old Broomhills Visitor Centre which is still advertised as such on road signs but is now just a restaurant. We had a late lunch there.
When we resumed the walk, I realised we were nearly in Diggle.
There's now a cafe on the towpath which certainly wasn't there in 1978.
We ended our walk at the entrance to the Standedge tunnel.
We just had a short stroll to the bus stop at Diggle. Previous LTS visits to Diggle had never been very happy but apart from a long-ish wait for the bus this one was fine. We caught the bus to Greenfield Station where we had a 45-minute wait. We went in the pub across the road. A fair few of the custiomers were doing the same thing. It started raining as the train approached.
We got back home without further incident.
