219 Saturday 25th May 2024 Colden Valley
Simon's choice was another walk in Calderdale . I thought a walk up the Colden Valley from Hebden Bridsge would cover some new ground.
We drove to Hebden Bridge and parked on the Fairfield road to avoid parking charges. Then we faced disaster. I realised that I had left my walking boots at home. I knew my feet would end up blistered if I did the whole walk in trainers so we went to Boots first and I covered potential pressure points in plasters.
We started our walk up the Buttress , taking a break at the old graveyard to look over the town.
We then took a left on a path contouring above Mytholm through the woods. I caught sight of an animal scampering over a boulder but it was too fleeting to identify. We then climbed through the woods to Ted Hughes' old house at Lumb Bank.
While we rested by the brook a large heron flew past. We climbed up the other side and turned right for the New Delight pub. I was pleased to find that it was still open.
We popped in for a drink. We started doing a quiz in a CAMRA magazine and spent longer there than we intended. When we came out the temperature seemed to have dropped considerably and it was quite chilly. We took paths through the fields to High Gate Farm but didn't buy much there as we were sated from the pub.
We enjoyed the classic view over to Stoodley Pike.
This was the view back down the valley from Popples Common/
We took the path through the fields and emerged in Heptonstall underneath this lintel.
We took an alternative route back to Hebden Bridge with more stunning views.
Simon had some Vietnamese Chicen from his favourite street food stall. I got an ice cream on the walk back to the car.
