220 Saturday 1 June 2024 Standedge walk
As it was a nice day I opted to continue our Huddersfield Narrow Canal walk by walking over the tops above the Standedge Tunnels. We caught the train to Greenfield then the Huddersfield bus to Diggle. The front seats upstairs that Simon likes to sit on were occupied by two absolute slobs , a man and woman I think but it was difficult to be sure.
We got off at Diggle and walked over to the canal.Simon was hungry so we called at the canalside cafe but they didn't have anything suitable so we moved on. We crossed the bridge over the railway and noted the entrance to the rail tunnel.
We then popped in the Diggle Hotel where Simon had some crisps and I bought a still-warm pork pie which was delicious.
We headed up Boat Lane with good views down the valley back to Scouthead
After a couple of rest stops. we reached the A62 at Standedge Cutting. I pointed out the old Floating Light pub on the right as we looked back over Diggle.
We stopped briefly by the side of Brun Clough Reservoir.
I pointed out the sign for the Pennine Bridleway.
We headed along the Pennine Way. almost to Millstone Edge. then turned right on a grassier path over Marsden Moor. Pule Hill soon came into view.
A little further on, the path was paved.
We then passed the mysterious engine house on the moor where a couple were doing some photography. We had a friendly chat with them.
From there. we began the long descent into Marsden past the air shafts on the flanks of Pule Hill.
The last path down to Eastergate Bridge was unpleasantly rough but we survived. We walked down to Tunnel End and caught the shuttle barge to the town centre.
We looked around Marsden and had something to eat in a bar and restaurant which seemed exclusively staffed by gays, not the first place I'd associate with gay culture but the world changes.
We caught the bus back to Greenfield and found the front seats occupied by the same couple ! Perhaps they'd been shuttling between Oldham and Huddersfield all day.. We had 45 minutes before the next train so we went in The Railway Inn again and played cards. Then we caught the trains home.
