224 Saturday 29th June 2024 Huddersfield Narrow Canal ; Marsden to Huddersfield
This was my choice, the conclusion to our walk along the towpath of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Though it was raining hard, it was forecast to clear up later in the day ( which it did ).
We drove to Todmorden for a train to Mirfield which was delayed. At Mirfield we found that our next train had been cancelled so we were stuck in the town for an hour. After a visit to the local library we decided to catch a bus into Huddersfield. On the way to the bus stop, Simon decided to punch a wanker.
We then had a bit of a wait for the train to Marsden. We went looking for Huddersfield's famous station cat but couldn't find him.
When we finally arrived in Marsden, we got walking straightaway. It was clear from the locks that we were now heading downhill.
This barge has been re-purposed.
The scenery was very pleasant.
At one point the towpath was closed off and we had a pleasant diversion by a reservoir.
As we approached the intermediate town of Slaithwaite there was a huge mill by the canalside.
Simon spotted there was a record shop in there so we stopped by.
We passed through Slaithwaite where the canal runs right down the middle of the high street.
There was another huge converted mill as the landscape became more urban-ised.
There was a cryptic message on one of the lock gates.
We soon approached the impressive viaduct carrying the Huddersfield-Sheffield line over the valley.
Just after that, we started passing through some vandalised doors that had been placed across the towpath. Finally, we came to an intact one and a notice that this stretch of the towpath was closed due to asbestos risk. We had to back track a considerable distance and then scramble over a high wall to make progress through the streets of Huddersfield.
We eventually came to the basin where the Narrow Canal gives way to the Broad Canal.
We cut through the campus of the former polytechnic to reach the town centre.
We had tea at the Wimpy Bar once again before returning to the station. We returned to Todmorden via Halifax.
