247 Saturday 14th December 2024 Healey to LIttleborough

 As  the  forecast  was  decent, I  chose a continuation of  our  stations  walk. We  drove  to  Healey  Corner where  we  had  a  brief  refreshment  break at a sandwich shop  before  setting  off. We  headed  up  Ending  Rake  with  its  unusual  archway.


We  soon got our  first view  of  distant  Littleborough.


We  walked along the embankment of the  disused Brown House  Wham Reservoir.


We  walked through the  fields  and  past  one  or  two  farms into  Wardle village.


The  rest  of  the  walk was  very  familiar  territory  for  me. We  walked along  Pedlar  Brow Lane  towards  Littleborough. We  then  ascended the  Hundred  Steps to  the  top  of  Birch Hill, noting  a  new  handrail on  the  right.


This  was  the  view  over  to  Littleborough  from  the  top.


We  dropped over  the  other  side  into Dearnley  where  we  paid  a  visit  to my  parents' grave.


We  then  walked into  Stubley  and  up  the  ABC  Steps to  reach  Littleborough via the  canal towpath.


We  went   to  the  Coffe  on  the  Corner  cafe  for  a  late  lunch  then took  a  couple  of  buses  back to Healey.

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester. 209 Friday 15th- Sunday 17th March Chester Weekend

 We  headed  back  for  our  third  stay  at  Chester  Trafford  YHA. We  arrived  in  the  early  evening. Simon  noted  the  flowering  cherry  in  blossom. We  were  allocated  Room S38 We  had  breakfast  at  the  hostel  then  drove  into  the  city  centre and  parked  at  the  station. We  caught  the  train  to  Shotton  noting  the  unusual layout  of  the  station. We   waited  for  a  bus  to  Wepre  Country  Park but  then  decided  to  walk  there  instead  which  was  a  pleasant  stroll.  Julie  came  with  us  on  this  one, a  visit  to  our  friends  in  Selside  using  the  new  Dalesrail  service  providing  direct  trains  between Bromley Cross and  Horton-in-Ribblesdale  on  a  Saturday. I  noted  the  crackle  of  branches  as  the  train  went  through  the  little-used  section  between Clitheroe  and  Hellifield. We  noted  the  Fat  Controller at  Settle  station.
