277 Saturday 26th July 2025 Castle Hill, Huddersfield
Simon chose to return to Castle Hill on a day when the Jubilee Tower was actually open.
We drove to Todmorden to take advantage of the cheaper rail fares. The train to Brighouse was full of people travelling to York Races. From Brighouse there was a rail replacement bus service to Huddersfield.
We posed by the statue of Harold Wilson outside the station.
Simon spotted the record shop Vinyl Tap on the other side of the square. I'd done some business by mail order with them but never been in the shop before. We went in there and Simon purchased an LP. We then found our way to the Wimpy Bar for lunch.
We then caught a bus to Almondbury. I hadn't realised how far the centre of the village was from the Tower so we ended up catching another bus to get us nearer. We climbed up to the tower by a fire-damaged path that had been closed off on our previous path and clearly hadn't been repaired yet but the wooden and tape barrier had been dismantled.
We paid our admission fee for the Tower and the staff kindly agreed to look after Simon's record while we climbed the stairs. It was marred by a dog turd on the stairs but Fortunately neither of us trod on it. As expected the views were terrific. Here's looking over Huddersfield.
Here's looking over to Emley Moor.
Here's looking over to the Peak District
Here's looking over towards Blackstone Edge
Looking towards Halifax
The dog turd had been cleared by the time we descended . After that, we went for a walk around the perimeter path.
As the Tower didn't sell any refreshments and we had a long wait for a bus. we decided to walk down to the Victoria Inn in Newsome village for a drink, From there it was a short walk to a busier bus route. We caught the bus back into Huddersfield .We got the replacement bus back to Brighouse but there a state of confusion reigned. Leeds Station had closed down due to a signalling failure and all trains in or out were indefinitely postponed. We had to catch a bus to Halfax. If we'd been better advised at Huddersfield, we could have caught a bus to Halifax from there. The guys at Halifax train station advised us to take a bus to Todmorden instead, So the trip lasted a lot longer than anticipated.
