58 Saturday 6th March 2021 Higher Wheelton to Feniscowles

 Today  was  my  choice  so  we  continued  along  the  towpath  of  the  Leeds-Liverpool  Canal.  Today's  stretch  was  a  little  less  scenic  but  interesting. We  got  off  to  an  early  start  and  got  some  breakfast  at  The  Golden  Lion , Higher  Wheelton  where  we  parked  up. We  then  walked  down  to  the  canal.

Just  a  short  distance  into  the  walk, Simon  noticed  the  Thirlmere  Aqueduct  above  the  far  bank.

We  soon  came  to  Withnell  Fold.

Here  we met  a  small  party of  walkers. I  recognised  one  as  Kevin  Matthews  who  was  briefly  involved  with  the  RA  group  I'm  in. We  had  a  chat  but  I  think  I  remembered  him  more  than  vice  versa.  Going  forward,  we  came  out  of  the  wooded  Lostock  valley  and  into  more  open  country. We  saw  fewer  people  on  this  stretch.

We  soon  crossed  under  the  M65.

Not  long  after  that  we  came  to  Riley  Green.

Just  beyond  that  was  the  sad  remains  of  The Boatyard  pub  which  burned  down  in  2017. Thwaites  had  promised  to  rebuild  it  but  there's  been  silence  for  the  last  two  years, Simon  remembered  accompanying  me  to  meetings  there  a  few  years  ago  and  was  dismayed  to  see  the  destruction.

 There  were  still  some  attractive  parts  further  on. Now  the  people  we  saw  were  generally   younger   local  people  using  the  towpath  as  a  shortcut  rather  than  walkers  like  us.

After  going  under  the  A674  , the  land  to  the  left  was  fenced  off, this  being  the  site  of  the  old  Star  Paper  Mill  which  closed  in  2008, the  site  being  passed  for  housing.

We  soon  crossed  the  aqueduct  over  the  river  Roddlesworth,  overlooked  by  the  motorway  doing  the  same.

We  ended  the  walk  at  this  bridge  on  the  edge  of  Feniscowles

We  caught  the  bus  back  to  Higher  Wheelton  and  went  to  Spout  House  Farm  for  lunch  ( highly  recommended ).
