74 Saturday 26 June 2021 Martin Mere
Simon wanted to go somewhere with animals so we went to Martin Mere. We had to set off early to get there in a reasonable time.
This entailed a 50 minute wait in Bolton so we went to Wetherspoons for some breakfast. We then caught the train to New Lane, a little station in the West Lancashire farmland. It took about 30 minutes to walk to Martin Mere from there. I bought a guidebook and some bird seed when we went in.
Simon wanted to go in the playpark first.
We then started feeding the ducks. The guidebook had a tick list of species we were likely to see and we worked at that for about an hour.
We found our way to the canoes . After some hesitation, I decided we'd give them a go. However we left the cameras at the office in case we ended up in the water. We managed to work out a rhythm and got round without rolling over or having to use the refuges. After docking we headed for the cafe via the otters.
Lunch was quite nice. After that we went pond dipping where we caught some insect larvae and newt tadpoles. We then visited some areas we'd missed earlier and popped into the main hide.
After that, it was time to walk back to the station in the afternoon heat. There was nowhere to get a drink so we were relieved when the train arrived. We had time to nip out and get one in Bolton.
