79 Saturday 7 August 2021 Hapton to Burnley

 The  weather  wasn't  promising  at  all  for  a  walk  in  Calderdale  so  we   decided  to  head  for  the  canal. I  messaged  my  friend  Jo  who  said  it  wasn't  raining  in  Burnley  which  gave  me  encouragement  because  it  was  bucketing  down  in  Bolton  when  we  set  off. It  did  get  better  as  we  crossed  into  Lancashire  and  it  was  quite  pleasant  when  we  arrived  in  Hapton. By  that  point  I  knew  I'd  left  my  rucksack  at  home  but  we  did  have  provisions.

We  had  a  look  at  the  board about  Hapton.


There  was  a  row  of  barges  just  beyond  the  first  bridge.


Simon  was  taken  with one  called  Happy Ness.


We  soon  went  under  the  motorway  again  under  a  colossal  bridge/




The  surroundings  became  more  urban  as  we  passed  through  Rose  Grove.


These  bridges  indicated  we were  at  the  outskirts  of  Burnley.  Simon  was  happy.



A  barge  soon  went  past  us.


The  rain  was  getting  heavier  so  we  waited  under  the  bridge  for  a  while.


Shortly  after  that  we  were  confronted  by  Gannow  Tunnel  which  meant  we  had  to  find  our  way  through  Burnley  to  the  opposite  entrance.



This  wasn't  easy  and  we  must  have  asked  about  half  a  dozen  people  before  we  got  to  the  right  route. It  passed  this  piece  of  street  art.



Finally  we  got  there.


We  went  across  the  Whittlefield  aqueduct.


The  aqueduct  is  home  to  a  temporary  shrine  to  someone  called  Danny  Holden  although  it's  not  clear  if  it  was  the  scene  of  his  death.


We  passed  the gloriously  restored  Victoria  Mill


Another  barge  went  past  as  we  reached  the  Weaver's  Triangle


We  stopped  the  walk  at  the  Heritage  Centre which  unfortunately  was  closed.


We  then  traipsed  through  Burnley's  shopping  area  to  get  to  the  dismal  and  misnamed  Burnley  Central. We  caught  the  train  back  to  Hapton  then  stopped  off  at  Ramsbottom  for  lunch  at  the  chippy.

 Having  got  the  bit  between  his  teeth, Simon  wanted to finish  the  towpath  with  the  final  section  into  Sowerby  Bridge.. 242 Sunday 10th November 2024 National Football Museum

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester. We  took  a  rail replacement  bus  into  Bolton and  picked  up  a  train  to  Manchester  there. We went  to Subway for  some  lunch  first We then  went  to  the  museum. 244 Sunday November 24th 2024 Stockport Record Fair

 There wasn't much doubt Simon would choose this option when I put it on the "menu" . We caught the train  to  Stockport , making the last  leg of the  journey on a Pendolino train. We  had  lunch at a Wetherspoon's before making our way  to the  record  fair  in  the  Guildhall. It  looked like a  failed mission but Simon found  something at the last minute. We  called in at  the  War  Memorial Art Gallery  which  was  on  the  way  back to  the  station. The  exhibit was  a  sries  of  townscapes  such  as  this  one  of  the  viaduct.
