106 Friday 18 -Sunday 20 February 2022 Burton-in-Kendal weekend

 For  our  next  nights  away  trip  we  took  advantage  of  a  good  rate  at  the  Burton-in-Kendal  Travelodge.

We  were  mindful  of  the  storm  warnings  but  our  journey  there  was  uneventful. We  got  a  good  room  on  the  ground  floor  but  had  to  be  mindful  of people  walking  their  dogs  on  the  bank  outside. I  think  we  went  to  Buger  King  for  our  meal  that  evening.

The  next  day, the weather  was  absolutely  atrocious so  after  breakfast  we  amended  our  itinerary  and  went  to  the  Lakeland  Wildlife  Oasis in  the  morning.

Here  are  some  of  the  things  we  saw :

We  then  headed  for  the  outside  enclosures  but  the  weather  was  still  terrible.  We  had  a  nice  chat  with  a  guy  who  was  promoting  the  Woodland  Trust , a  thankless  task  on  such  an  awful  day  but  at  least  he  was  under  shelter. 

We  stalled  for  time  by  going  for  a  drink in  the  cafe.  There  was  a  list  of  events  chalked  up   on  a  board  and  we  waited  for  the  "Fossa  Feeding  Frenzy"  but  the  time came  and  went  without  anyone  bothering  with  an  explanation.

Eventually  we  decided  to  brave  the  elements  and  venture  outside. There  was  some  shelter  at  times  but  we  still  got  pretty  wet. Of  course,  many  of  the  animals  decided  not  to  venture  outside  their  sleeping  quarters  on  a  rainy  winter's  day  so  we  missed  at  least  half  of  them.

The  meerkats  were  active  in  the  indoor  part  of  their  enclosure.

The  tamarins  also  had  the  sense  to  stay  indoors.

After  we had  finished  the  round  I  decided  to  have  one  last  try  at  seeing   at  least  one  of the  star  attractions, a  pair  of  snow  leopards. We  were  in  luck  as  one  was  now  sat  on  a  tree  outside.

The  combination  of  heavy  rain  and  perspex made  getting  a  good  shot  difficult.

After  that  we  went  looking  for  lunch. I  remembered  a  garden  centre  near  Silverdale  that  had  a  good  tea  room  but  was  unable  to locate  it  so  we  ended  up  lunching  at  the  tea-room  at  Leighton  Moss Bird  Sanctuary  instead.

By  the  time  we  came  out,  the  weather  had  miraculously  changed  so  we  were  able  to  film  some  nearby castles  most  notably  Arnside  Tower. The  results  can  be  seen  here.

We  returned  to  base  for  a  rest  then  drove  into  Kendal  for  tea  at  the  Miles  Thompson pub. Simon  enjoyed  the  God  Bless  The  Go-Gos  CD  we  played  in  the  car.

We  had  planned  to  join  the  walk  organised  by  my  friends  in  Hike  On  Lancashire  from  Arnside  on  the  Sunday   but  the  outlook  was  pretty  grim  so  I  rang  the  leader  Pete  and  left  a  message  that  we  wouldn't  be  joining  him  after  all. Instead  we  decided  to  go  into  Kendal  It  was  raining  again  by  the  time  we  set off. 

We  first  went  to  Clarks  to  get  Simon  some  new  shoes. That  was  a  success but  things  rapidly  went  downhill  from  there. We  headed  for  the  Brewery  Arts  Centre  passing  this  amusing  signpost.

We  found  the  Arts  Centre  but  it  was  closed. We  then  traipsed  around  the  town  for  the  museums  but  they  were  all  closed  too. The  swollen  river  Kent  looked  impressive  but  we  got  soaked.

We  then  went  in  the  Ye  Olde  Fleece  Inn  for  lunch. The  food  was  OK  but  the  service  could  have  been  friendlier. It  did  have  a  nice  picture  commemorating  Wainwright  on  the  wall.

Simon  seemed  happy  enough.

After  that ,  I  couldn't  think  of  anything  we  could  do  to  prolong  the  trip  so  we  headed  home.
