150 Friday 25th -Sunday 27th November 2022 Silver Anniversary Weekend
Julie took charge of this one and booked a weekend at Green View Lodges in Welton, near Carlisle . We had previously stayed there while on walking weekends with our walking group. Our friends from Selside who don't want to be on the internet stayed with us. Our agreed plan was to visit Carlisle on the Saturday and do a walk on Hadrian's Wall on the Sunday. The kids enjoyed their first session in the hot tub on the Friday night.
On Saturday morning we drove into Carlisle where we filmed a video about the castle which can be seen here. Julie enjoyed the free samples of wine in the shop.
We then went for lunch at a pub near the station where we were amused by a young girl in a very short skirt whose moves up and down the stairs gave us regular views of her underwear. After that we went to a Warhammer shop as requested by our friends' son. We then had a short stroll along the river Caldew. The walk passed above the station.
This was a view back towards the Cathedral.
This is the bridge back over to the castle and the car park.
We walked across the bridge.
We went to a supermarket before returning to the lodges. The donkeys in the adjacent field were out.
We started our walk next day from Birdoswald Roman Fort. This is the outer ditch.
This is looking back to the museum.
We were soon walking alonside the Wall. This mile castle was just before a steep drop to the valley of the river Irthing
The Trail crosses the river by this modern footbridge.
Just up the river are the remains of the Roman bridge at Willoford.
After a steep climb to a farm, we followed a section of the Wall towards Gilsland. At Gilsland we left the Trail and followed the recommended route back to Birdoswald, It had some interestingly rough bits.
Back at Birdoswald we said goodbye to our friends and started for home. We left the M6 at Shap and headed into Kendal. Simon and I went to mass there then we all had a meal in the Miles Thompson. Then it was non-stop for home.
