176 Friday 2 June to Sunday 4 June 2023 Chester weekend
For this weekend, we trawled the YHA website to find the best offer and it turned out to be Chester Trafford once more. It was a lovely afternoon and we got there in good time.
After chilling out for half an hour, we went out to play chess in the garden. I won.
We weren't sure what these were.
The next morning we had breakfast at the hostel alongside some knobheads wearing their cycle helmets. We then drove to Chester and parked at the station.
We had a short wait for the train to Flint.
We went to the castle to film a video which you can see here.
After finishing that , we caught a bus to Holywell. We tried to alight at St Winifred's Well but missed the stop and had to get off in the town at the top of the hill. We walked down to the shrine.
There I learned that you couldn't bathe without a T-shirt so had to leg it back up the hill to get a couple of T shirts from a charity shop. I made it in enough time to get back down for the bathing. We had the changing rooms to ourselves.
One guy was already in the pool and another had a quick dip in and came out but everyone else was just hovering around when I went in. The water was icy cold.
We had a nice chat with a guy from Ireland who'd been in the pool the longest then got changed to look around the shrine and the museum. We then went into town for a late lunch at the Wetherspoon's. There was a dancing festival in the town square.
We then caught the bus back to Flint then the train to Chester and drove back to the hostel. We had dinner there again.
In the morning we drove to a nearby church where the preist looked like Sean Wallace from The Chase. We then drove to Hatchmere where we were temporarily confounded by the disappearance of a car park indicated in the guide book. The walk was chosen with the idea that the trees would keep us in the shade and it did work out.
We had a stop for an ice cream at the huge visitor centre where I walked through a large swarm of flies.
The last mile was in more open country but wasn't too arduous. We had a drink at The Carrier's Inn before making our way home.
