197 Saturday 9th December 2023 Manchester Christmas Markets

 After  another  hiatus  with illness  and  other  commitments, the  trips  resumed  with  a  trip  to  Manchester  for  the  Christmas  markets.

The  weather  was  pretty  awful  so  we  used  the  Metrolink to  get  around  the  city  centre.


Simon   found  his  way  to  the  Cannoli  stall . We  bought  one  each. Simon  really  enjoyed  his; I  thought  mine  was  a  bit  expensive  for  what  it  was.


We  moved  past  a  hot  dog  stall


We  went to St  Peter's  Square  where  the  Town  Hall  was  completely  covered  for  renovation.


We  visited  HMV then  went  for  lunch  at  The  Seven  Stars. We  then took  the  train  for  Rochdale's  FA  Trophy match against  Gateshead. We  got  the  message  the  game  was  called  off  just  as  the  train  was  pulling  into  Rochdale  Station. So  we  caught  the  next  train  home.

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester. We  took  a  rail replacement  bus  into  Bolton and  picked  up  a  train  to  Manchester  there. We went  to Subway for  some  lunch  first We then  went  to  the  museum.  Julie  came  with  us  on  this  one, a  visit  to  our  friends  in  Selside  using  the  new  Dalesrail  service  providing  direct  trains  between Bromley Cross and  Horton-in-Ribblesdale  on  a  Saturday. I  noted  the  crackle  of  branches  as  the  train  went  through  the  little-used  section  between Clitheroe  and  Hellifield. We  noted  the  Fat  Controller at  Settle  station. We  were  met  off  the  train  at  Horton-in-Ribblesdale  and  driven  up  to  Selside. The  view  over  to Pen-y-Ghernt  was  as  great  as  ever. 240 Saturday 26th October 2024 Crewe Heritage Centre

 This  was  Simon's  choice  from  a  menu  I  drew  up  at  his  request. Naturally, we  went  down  to  Crewe  by  train. The  annoying  thing  about  the  Heritage  Centre  is  that  you  see  it  on  the  way  into  Crewe  station  and  then  realise  you've  got  a  bit  of  a  walk  to  get  back  to  it !   Of  coure  Simon  needed  a  rest  once  we  got  inside  the  Centre.
