200 Sunday 7th January 2024 Rochdale Canal towpath : Todmorden to Hebden Bridge

  We  did  the  Mill's  Hill  to  Littleborough  stretch  during the Christmas  holidays  and  had  done  Littleborough  to  Todmorden  a  couple  of  years  earlier. Simon  wanted  to  get  on  with  the  next  stretch  so  we  drove  to  Todmorden. 

I  told  Simon  there  used  to  be  a  curry  restaurant  by  the  side  of  the  canal  here which gave the  spot  a  wonderful  aroma.



The  design  of  the  mooring  here  was  new  to  me.


Stoodley Pike soon  came  into  view.


We  soon came  to  Lobb Mill.


There  was  a  nice  message  on  the near  side.


We  deviated  slightly to  pay  a  return  visit  to  Nutty's  Butty's


 Not  long  after that , we  met  an  old  friend  of  mine  Mark  Billington from  the  Lancashire  Young Person's  Walking  Club. He  was  preparing  a  walk for  his  Meetup  group  with  two  companions I  didn't  know. We  had  a  brief  chat  then  they  moved  ahead . Before  long  though,  we  overtook  the  other  two  with  Mark  no  longer  in  sight.


Eventually, we  found  him  having  a  break  at  Stubbins  Wharf  on  the  edge  of  Hebden  Bridge>  I  had  a  longer  chat  with  him  as  he  waited  for  his  companions to  catch  up. We  moved  on   and  came  off  the  canal  at the  little  theatre. On  Bridge  Gate,  we  stopped  by  a  busker  with  an  unusual stringed  instrument. As  usual,  Simon blagged a  go  on  it.



We  had  a  stop  at  a not  very  good  cafe  then  returned  to  the  canal  for  the  short  stretch to  the  train  station.


We  caught  the  train  back  to  Todmorden  then  drove  back  home.

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester.  Julie  came  with  us  on  this  one, a  visit  to  our  friends  in  Selside  using  the  new  Dalesrail  service  providing  direct  trains  between Bromley Cross and  Horton-in-Ribblesdale  on  a  Saturday. I  noted  the  crackle  of  branches  as  the  train  went  through  the  little-used  section  between Clitheroe  and  Hellifield. We  noted  the  Fat  Controller at  Settle  station. 224 Saturday 29th June 2024 Huddersfield Narrow Canal ; Marsden to Huddersfield

 This  was  my  choice, the  conclusion  to  our  walk  along  the  towpath  of  the  Huddersfield  Narrow  Canal. Though  it  was  raining hard, it  was  forecast  to  clear  up later  in  the  day ( which  it  did ). We  drove  to  Todmorden  for  a  train  to  Mirfield  which  was  delayed.  At  Mirfield  we  found  that  our  next  train  had  been  cancelled so  we  were  stuck  in  the  town for an  hour.
